The way this all works is simple. In the beginning when CALA first started there were only meetings, also referred to as groups. These groups formed what is called an Area. After CALA grew and expanded from meetings popping up everywhere, the Area Service Committee (ASC) divided the area, into four territories known as districts, to help the ASC manage its overall business. Infrastructure was needed to allow CALA to continue its growth. The District Service Committees (DSC) are only a smaller extension of the ASC, charged with the responsibility to oversee the day-to-day business of CALA in their respective district.
Each meeting elects one GSR (General Service Representative) to represent the meeting at the District Service Committee Meeting (DSC). This GSR attends their designated District meeting once a month and reports back to their group the information discussed at the District meeting, like up-coming events, for example. At the District meeting, GSR's, through its group conscience, elects a Chair Person, Vice Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. The election process can be found in our Area Bylaws. The GSR's and the DSC Board elects District Service Representatives (DSR's) to attend the Area Service Committee (ASC) meeting each month and reports back to their respective District, the information transacted at the ASC Meeting. Each District is allowed to have 1 DSR for every 10 accredited meetings. Both GSR's and DSR's are encouraged to take service positions at all levels of service, however everyone is welcome. The specific qualifications for District and Area service positions can be found in our Area Bylaws. Being of service is not only a step in our recovery but for many it is a vital pathway to long term sobriety.
